The Jets made their first big splash of the offseason on Monday when they signed wide receiver Corey Davis to a three year deal worth 37.5 million, with 27 of it guaranteed. Davis is coming off his best season as a pro in which he caught 65 passes for 984 yards and 5 touchdowns. The speedy wideout joins a Jets receiving room that’s highlighted by 2nd year pro Denzil Mims and veteran Jamison Crowder. The trio has the potential to make the unit a strength for the Jets and give whoever’s playing quarterback some explosive weapons to throw to.
Davis is know primarily for his ability to stretch the field with his speed, which was an element the Jets offense lacked big time a year ago. After losing home grown talent Robby Anderson in free agency last year to the Carolina Panthers, the Jets failed to replace their teams only deep threat. They tried to patch up the loss by signing Breshard Perriman but injuries seemed to keep him from ever finding his rhythm, aside from a few explosive plays with the strong armed Joe Flacco at quarterback.
Davis was able to show last year that he is a much more well rounded receiver than people thought. Known in the past as an occasional home run hitter, Davis proved he’s more than capable of being a legitimate top target on a playoff team. He was an excellent number two playing across AJ Brown on a Titans team that won 11 games and a division title last year. In fact, Davis has made the playoffs three out of the four years he’s been in the league. Having somebody with playoff experience on this young Jets roster will certainly be a welcoming sign.
Davis is just the first of many moves Jets fans can expect Gang Green to make in free agency. Chris Godwin or Allen Robinson would have been nice but Davis is certainly not a bad consolation prize. There are still other receivers on the market in JuJu Smith-Schuster and Kenny Golladay, and it would not be surprising if the Jets go after one more top receiver.
