The New York Giants still have a long way to go

For the 8th time in 9 seasons, the New York Giants are off to an 0-2 start. Last night's 30-29 loss in Washington was emblematic of many of the issues that still face the Giants organization, namely thanks to a boatload of mistakes and missed opportunities that cost the Giants a chance to win.
The Giants cost themselves at least 14 points thanks to a holding penalty that wiped a Daniel Jones rushing touchdown off the board as well a dropped touchdown pass from Darius Slayton. Joe Judge also made a poor coaching decision after Washington gave the Giants a gift late with an interception by James Bradberry. Instead of going for the kill and trying to score a touchdown, Judge had the Giants play for a field goal by running into the line, leaving plenty of time on the clock for Washington to rally for a victory.
Making matters worse for the Giants was the fact that the game-icing mistake came on special teams, Judge's specialty when he coached for the New England Patriots. Dustin Hopkins missed a 48-yard field goal that should have given the Giants the win but Dexter Lawrence, who was lined up over the ball, jumped offsides. The end result was a second chance for Hopkins, who nailed the game-winner to deal a very damaging loss to the Giants.
These kind of sloppy mistakes came after Judge ran a very tough camp focused on discipline, which isn't a good sign since it looks like the players may have tuned out their head coach. The Giants also had plenty of sloppy play on the offensive line, which saw Jones get sacked four times and knocked down plenty more.
The biggest concern appears to be the Giants' defense, which was viewed as the strength of the team entering the season. An average to below-average quarterback has now carved up the unit in back-to-back weeks as Taylor Heinicke completed 34 of 46 passes for 336 yards and two touchdowns, picking apart the Giants' strong secondary.
This loss is extremely alarming for the Giants, who entered the year with hopes of winning the NFC East and now find themselves in yet another 0-2 hole. A game against Atlanta appears winnable but dates with New Orleans, Dallas and the Rams leave little room for error in the following weeks. The next 10 days should be miserable for the Giants, who have to get their act together quickly or heads could roll with another lost season.
